Case of the Missing Energy Bars

Crime Scene: Coastal Camp Site 5, Point Reyes, CA

Date/Time: 10 Sept 05, between 1.30pm - 3.30pm

Victims: Tap & Scott

Account of event by vic & witnesses:

Campers arrived at campsite about 12.45pm. After surveying the area, they decided to go for a short hike before coming back to unpack and pitch the tents. All bags were left on the ground surrounding the main (and only) dinning table & bench. Campers left site at about 1.30pm.

Campers returned to site about 3.30pm. Nic 1st noticed an opened side pocket of Carol's backpack. Then Tap realized all the pockets were unzipped.

Everyone began checking their own bags when Scott and Tap finally concluded that they each lost a couple of energy bars originally placed inside the top pocket of their backpacks.

Carol did not lose anything except having her ziplog bag of cutleries ripped, and all backpack pockets unzipped. Nic's backpack had 1 pocket unzipped but lost nothing as well.

there were signs that the bags and water bottles were trampled upon, but investigators were unable to lift the prints. Investigators were also puzzled why burglers did not make away with the valuable stuff like sleeping bags/pads, camera tripods and jackets.

As none of the valuables were missing, the campers decided not to press charges. the case was officially closed.

after notes:
it is known that birds are capble of unzipping pockets. it is evident that only side pockets with or near to potential food source were tampered with and it is hence highly possible that this group of campers fell victim to the notorious crow/raven/jay family known to reside in the area.

case status: closed but unsolved

Comments:
Dear Famous Five investigators,

You have done well in trying to solve a mystery. However, you could have proved your theory by trying to notice if there were particularly hyperactive ravens/crows/jackdaws around the area. I must also add that you forgot to check out the squirrels and raccoons. Why?
Winter is near. Squirrels are very domesticated now. Energy bars are perfect to store during hibernation period. Please do not neglect post-modern squirrels next time. One day, they will rule the world.
Racoons are bandits and scavengers in nature. They will make a mess of everything just to take the necessary. Yes, even newspapers.

Till the next compelling case,
Blurlock Holmes
